Another month, another step closer to number one.

Song #46 in the Riverside Class of 1980 Top 50 Countdown gets going almost before you realize it has started. A couple of notes, a couple of drum beats, and suddenly one of the most distinctive personalities of our high school soundtrack is coming through the speakers.

It’s laid-back, playful and filled with lines we all seemed to know, even if some of us probably never stopped to figure out exactly what all of them meant. It was the kind of song that sounded perfectly at home coming out of the radio on a drive through Painesville Township, Concord or Leroy, with nowhere particularly important to be.

So, what song did our classmates put at number 46?

Welcome to the September 2026 edition of the Riverside Class of 1980 Top 50 Countdown of songs from our years in High School. Song number 46.

Some songs came charging out of the radio demanding your attention. This one just leaned back, grinned, and waited for you to come along. It starts with that loose guitar groove, a little harmonica drifting through the air, and a beat that seems to have absolutely nowhere it needs to be.

Then the vocals arrive with a collection of nicknames, boasts, and phrases that probably made a lot more sense coming through the speakers of a car cruising down Route 20 than they ever would have in an English class at Riverside.

You didn’t need to understand every word. You just knew the guy singing sounded like he had life completely figured out, or at least had convinced himself that he did.

Whether it was playing on WMMS during a drive through Painesville Township, floating across a backyard pool in Concord, or providing the soundtrack while somebody wasted an entire afternoon near the Grand River, it made doing almost nothing feel like a perfectly reasonable plan.

Relaxed, playful, and just strange enough to be unforgettable, this was seventies cool without breaking a sweat.
